The five biggest tech trends transforming governments in 2022 by Bernard Marr from Forbes

Gisela Montes | GLASS | 01.19.2023

Bernard Marr, a well-known author, speaker, and advisor on business and technology, discusses the tech trends that transformed governments in 2022.

According to Marr, governments and public authorities are just as susceptible to disruption from technological advancement as any other sector. In fact, many government institutions have learned to become more flexible and agile by adopting tactics and strategies similar to those used in the private sector. This has led to an accelerated rate of digital transformation, with technologies such as AI, IoT, and digital twins now on the agendas of governments.

Marr shares five of the biggest tech trends transforming governments.

🧬 Digital Identity

Proving who someone is has become increasingly important in the digital age, and many governments have implemented centralized systems to verify access to state support such as healthcare and benefits. There are initiatives focused on decentralized identity, using blockchain and distributed ledger technology to create identity databases operated by algorithms.

🤖 AI and Automation of Public Services

Chatbots and AI-powered "cobots" were used to automate public services and assist human public service workers. Gartner analysts predict that 75% of governments will have at least three enterprise-wide automation initiatives underway by 2024.

🔒 Cyber Security

As a major concern for governments, with state-on-state and criminal cyberattacks on the rise, governments increased their investments in cybersecurity and implemented measures such as threat intelligence platforms, AI-powered security analytics, and biometric authentication.

💰 National Cryptocurrencies

Many countries considered creating their own digital currencies, known as national cryptocurrencies, using blockchain technology. These offer the benefits of being under government control while still providing the infrastructure advantages of existing cryptocurrencies. Some of the countries known to be exploring or implementing national digital currencies include the US, UK, China, Singapore, Japan, Russia, Sweden, Estonia, Tunisia, and Ecuador. While national cryptocurrencies offer many benefits, questions such as environmental impact and energy use still need to be addressed. This means that state cryptocurrency is likely to be a hot topic in the coming years.

🚀 The Rise of GovTech Startups

GovTech startups are driving the digital revolution in government organizations, bringing new thinking and solutions, such as AI, IoT, cloud, edge computing, and super-fast networks, to the challenge of digital transformation in the public sector. There are an estimated 2,000 GovTech startups in Europe, mainly based in the UK, France, and Germany. The market for GovTech solutions is worth around $400 billion per year, according to Accenture. The adoption of technology by governments can significantly impact our lives, and it is exciting to see innovation in this area as robust as it is in sectors like FinTech and MarTech.
